Obituary for Jean Elizabeth Eichorst

Jean Elizabeth Eichorst (nee Dospinescu), 86, of Somers Point, NJ, passed away on January 26, 2019. Born in Philadelphia on Christmas Eve, 1932, Jean was a first generation American who inherited her love of tea and scones from her English mother and her wanderlust from her Romanian father. When she was a young girl, her family moved to Beach Haven, NJ, where she planted her toes in the sand and lost her heart to the beach. From that day until the day she died, she was Jersey Girl in the truest sense. Jean went on to get her nursing degree and worked for many years at Shore Memorial Hospital. She joined a theater group, where she met Richard Eichorst when she had to hit him in the face with a pie. In 1959, they married and eventually had two children, Kate and Rich, and Jean retired from nursing. While her nursing career fit her healing nature, Jean’s true passion was music. She had an amazing high soprano voice and sang in the Christ Episcopal Church choir for many years, with other choral groups in the south Jersey area, including the Masterworks Choir of Ocean City, and at the occasional piano bar. She is probably best known, however, for singing wherever and whenever the mood struck her, which was always. She was never without a song in her heart, and that song often found its way out to be enjoyed by anyone around her. Jean always wanted to help, and volunteered her time and talents in many ways over the years. In her most recent venture, she found a way to combine her love of knitting with her need to help when she and friends from church formed the Knit Wits. The group would meet weekly to share tea, treats, and fellowship while knitting blankets and prayer shawls for hospice, homeless, and women’s shelters, and tiny hats for premature babies at the hospital. Always ready with a cup of tea and an encouraging word, Jean was a mother, a wife, a singer, a nurse, a traveler, a knitter, a cheerleader to all, a Jersey Girl, and a die-hard Eagles fan. But above all, she was a kind soul in an unkind world. Jean is greatly missed and survived by her children, Kate Eichorst (Cat) of Sarasota, FL., and Richard Eichorst (Jennifer) of Somers Point, NJ. Services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 157 Shore Rd., Somers Point, NJ, 08244.
