Obituary for Hazel Callahan

Print
Hazel Schoppy Callahan, who was born and raised in Atlantic City and lived out her life on Absecon Island, fulfilled her final earthly wish when she passed peacefully in her home in Margate on Tuesday October 30th. Hazel was born July 30, 1934 to Hazel Curley and William Schoppy. She was the third of what would be four siblings.

Hazel was a sharp-witted, independent woman who was before her time. She attended Atlantic City High School and graduated with the Class of 1953. She then attended Lasell College in Newton, Mass. Throughout her youth she worked in the family’s jewelry business, Wm. Schoppy Inc. She then went on to spend a life-long career with Atlantic City Electric Company. There she was a Supervisor to Key Punch Operators, putting her on the cutting edge of the start of the computing age at Atlantic Electric Co. She retired from Atlantic Electric in the mid 1990's as the Supervisor of Computer Production Control. She was endlessly dedicated to her career. Hazel was a proud member of Soroptomist International of Atlantic City.

In 1969 she married the love of her life William Callahan. The two were able to spend 31 glorious years together before William’s passing in 2001. Hazel was a vivacious woman who was an avid bowler, golfer, and formidable card-shark. She and William traveled throughout the United States and Europe and enjoyed wintering in Lake Worth, FL with her sister Barbara and brother-in-law William Talarico. Anyone who knew Haz, knew she was always a great source of joy.

Hazel was predeceased by her husband, William Callahan, her best friend, Joan Pesce, her brothers Johnny Schoppy and William Schoppy Jr., nephews William Joseph Talarico, Jr., Thomas J. Callahan Jr., sister in law Williamette DeVinney, brother in laws, William Joseph Talarico Sr. , Raymond P. Callahan and Thomas J. Callahan Sr.

Hazel is survived by her sister Barbara Talarico, her sister-in-law Barbara Gale Schoppy, her niece Diane Talarico-Cavanaugh( James Cavanaugh), her nephews David Talarico (Kim), John Schoppy (Tracy), Armand Schoppy (Irene), Melissa Lagroteria (Sam) her great-nephews William Cavanaugh (Jamie) and David and William (Billy) Talarico, John and James Schoppy, Ryan and Chase Lagroteria, great-nieces Kali and Molly Cavanaugh, Samanta Schoppy and Brianna Lagroteria.

Hazel is survived by her sister in law Nancy M. Callahan, her nieces Diane Davis Sally Murphy, Patricia A. Coady (Frank), Elizabeth M. Laney (Raymond), her nephews, Darryl DeVinney (Deborah) William J. Callahan Sr., Raymon P. Callahan, and James P. Callahan (Ha), her great-nieces Meghan Spinelli, Marie Callahan, Kathlynn Reidenback, her great-nephews, Nicholas and Caleb Laney and Ryan Paul and Dean Coady.

And so, as Frank Sinatra sang, “And now, the end is near, And so I face the final curtain, My friend, I'll say it clear, I'll state my case, of which I'm certain, I've lived a life that's full, I've traveled each and every highway, And more, much more than this, I did it my way”. Hazel was full of love and life and she sure did do it her way.
