Pagano, Anthony (Tony) “Pop”
Tony Pagano, 93, of Egg Harbor Township, peacefully passed away at his daughter’s home in North Carolina with family by his side on January 5th, 2019.
Tony was born July 3, 1925 in Bargaintown, NJ. He grew up with two brothers and four sisters. As a kid he helped with farming.
When he was 17 years old, he applied to the draft board so he could serve in the US Marines during WWII. He was in the first wave of Marines to storm the beaches at Guam and then later in Okinawa, Japan. He served bravely but was wounded and shipped home on a hospital ship.
After he recuperated, he worked various jobs but while working in a lumber yard he was sent to school to learn the carpentry trade. He created Tony Pagano Builders and was known as a successful residential and commercial carpenter, builder and contractor for over 50 years.
He married the love of his life, Jeanette Pagano for over 50 years, and they raised three children; Tony Jr., Michael, and Terri Pagano.
Tony was one of the founders of the EHT Youth Organization in the 1960’s where kids’ athletics were promoted and he participated as a coach. He served 25 years as a member of the Bargaintown Fire Department. He and his wife owned and operated Deer Run Campground.
Tony loved fishing, hunting and racing. He sponsored both his boys in regional auto racing events sporting the Pagano Builders trademark. In his earlier years he would travel to the North Carolina outer banks for deep sea fishing vacations. He was an avid hunter and was a lifetime member of the Northfield Gunning Club. For many years, he would vacation with his family in Daytona, Florida where he was a season ticket holder for the Daytona 500 races.
In his later years, Tony fished aboard the “Duke O’Fluke” out of Somers Point, NJ five days a week in season. He was often written up in local papers as the “legally blind” veteran taking home the cash pot for the biggest catch of the day!
He will be remembered as an honest man, a faithful husband and a loving father and grandfather. He is survived and will be dearly missed by his two sons Tony (Terry) of EHT, Michael (Andrea) of EHT, his daughter Terri (Steven) of Carrboro, NC, and his grandchildren Kaitlyn (Nathan), Michael Jr., Ayden and Calem, his sister Margaret East and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Tony’s celebration of life service which will be held Saturday January 26th. Receiving of family and friends will begin at 10:00 am at Adams-Perfect Funeral Home in Northfield, NJ. The Celebration of Life service will take place at 11:00 am and a graveside military service will follow at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Tony by taking a day to fish on the Duke O’Fluke asking if you can fish in Tony’s spot!
